The golden rule of database marketing is the 40:30:20:10 principle. Stated simply, it conveys the strength of each element in influencing the response to your campaign.
40 is for Database. Get it right, and your cash registers will start ringing! Get it wrong and you could lose more than you make.
30 is for the Offer, or what’s in it for the consumer, i.e. the reason why the consumer should or would respond. The product is never an offer, but its price could be. Without a great offer, your communication will receive no more than a cursory glance.
20 is for the Message, or the creative. Communicating your message effectively is the key. A combination of the right database, offer and communication, ensures that 90% of the battle is won.
The last ‘mile’, or 10, is for the Medium – advertising, direct mail, telephone call, SMS or email. Each one will have an impact on the final response you get. For instance, identical messages and offers are sent to identical databases via email to half the customers and via direct mail, to the other half. In our experience, direct mail will pull 20 to 200 times higher than an email.
